    • The Roman Coliseum is simply impressive. Looking at it today makes one wonder at the skill and manpower it took to create such a magnificent amphitheater almost 2000 years ago. The amphitheater used to be able to hold 50,000 spectators, who watched gladiators and animals fight. It stood nearly 50 meters high and 188m x 156m in length and width. Think two football fields by 1.5 football fields in area!

Today, it is a major attraction in Rome. There are plenty of guided tours in English that explain many aspects of the Coliseum. For those not interested in a guided tour, the line is much shorter across the street at the Forum so get your ticket there and then walk back to the Coliseum. It is only a two minute walk and will save you lots of time. In general, it gets very crowded here, so try to see the Coliseum in the early morning. In the summer, this is doubly important, as the summer heat can be unbearable in the afternoon.
