For most travelers, the highlight of any trip to Peru is undeniably the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu. Perched high in the mountainous jungles and completely hidden from view, Machu Picchu is an unbelieveable city of ruins that will leave you wondering how and why this magnificant lost city was ever built. There are several ways to experience Machu Picchu - by train from the former Inca capital of Cusco or on foot via the Inca Trail. The journey on foot takes at least three days and requires a local guide. Due to its popularity, tight controls have been instated to limit the number of people on this part of the Inca Trail. The train from Cusco offers a quicker albeit less memorable experience. Regardless of your choice, the trip to Machu Picchu is quite expensive, but well worth it. For the truly adventurous, order a Chicha (an alcoholic corn beverage that is fermented with saliva!) when you are in Aguas Calientes, or Machu Picchu Pueblo. Chicha won't be available everywhere but if you are determined, you will find it.
