Activity Summary for Explore the Mayan Ruins of Cobá
- Climb to the top of a Mayan pyramid in the jungles of Cobá, Mexico

Activity Details
- Coba, Quintana Roo, Mexico - February 2010
Half Day -
The Mayan Ruins of Coba are an excellent day trip from Tulum, Playa del Carmen or Cancun. These ruins, which are about 40 km west of Tulum, were only recently excavated. The highlight is the grand pyramid, a large structure that towers over the jungle. Unlike many other Mayan ruins, you can walk on the ruins, including to the top of the large pyramid. After a total of 120 steps, you reach the top and have a great panoramic view of the historical site and the surrounding jungle. It is not the most impressive site for ruins but the jungle setting, nice walking paths and grand pyramid makes this a fun excursion. You can rent bikes or hire a driver (also on a bike) to cover the ground more quickly. However, the walking is pleasant and the trails are not that long, so walking is a good way to explore these ruins.

- Comments/Directions : If arriving on your own, Cobá is best reached by car. Many visitors arrive to Cobá via tour buses, presumably organized by the larger hotels on the Mayan Riviera. A taxi from Tulum costs about 500 Pesos.
